Dementia-friendly principles for a safe and welcoming environment

In this project, we transformed a care home corridor by focusing on the specific needs of residents with dementia. We selected a warm, calming color palette with clear contrasts to support wayfinding and orientation. The lighting concept was optimized for even illumination, reducing shadows and creating a sense of safety. Clear, unobstructed pathways and subtle design cues help residents navigate and recall their surroundings. Safety was prioritized through supportive bars and textured flooring, while familiar decorative elements and personal touches evoke a homelike atmosphere.
